| Volvo D3 RICA ECM Upgrades
29/06/2010
For the 2011 model year Volvo introduced the brand new 2.0 D3 diesel engine with 163 hp and 400 Nm. RICA Engineering can proudly say to be the first to deliver ECM upgrades for these new D3 diesel engines.
With the RICA ECM upgrade the engine delivers 447 Nm of torque and 177 hp, which makes it the most powerful two litre Volvo diesel engine.
Volvo also introduced two different 2.4 litre D3 163 hp engines, one with 420 and one with 340 Nm. These engines are the same as the ones used in the earlier model years and can be tuned to either 245 or 240 hp depending on the model.

RICA Engineering are very proud to have been appointed as the official suppliers and scrutineers of ECM tuning software in the Dutch Touring Car Diesel Cup for the BMW and Volvo race diesel race cars in 2010.
Dutch Power Pack, the organisation responsible for the cup, wanted to level the playing field by ensuring that all the cars are tuned to the same level and that no teams had an unfair advantage through non-approved tuning modifications. A target lap time of approximately 2:05 seconds was required for all the cars and any cars which were significantly faster would have to be scrutinised. RICA Engineering have long been established as leaders in performance diesel tuning both on the road and on the race track as well as being equipped with precise dyno measuring equipment (Maha LPS 3000) and specialist ECU software analysis capability. Dutch Power Pack therefore considered RICA Engineering to be the best company to fulfil this new role. All the BMW (120d and 123d) and Volvo race cars have RICA performance software installed, tuned to ensure that no team has any performance advantage. RICA Engineering are also responsible for dyno testing and examining the ECU software in any cars which require post-race scrutineering on request of the race officials.
All the Touring Car Diesel Cup race events are held at Zandvoort and Assen in the Netherlands

RICA Engineering have launched a performance ECM upgrade for the all new Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 Turbo with Multi Air technology.
The rather small turbo on the 1.4 Multi Air gives the engine 135 hp and 206 Nm in stock configuration.
With the RICA Performance upgrade the torque increases by almost a third up to 260 Nm and 145 hp!
With the extra 64 Nm of lower end torque you never have to shift down when overtaking

| Is a RICA ECM upgrade the same as a diesel tuning box? No! Read on... | |
|
Tuning boxes are bolt-on devices that work by intercepting the signals between the ECM and the sensors to fool the ECM into altering the diesel fuel pressure in order to inject more fuel and therefore increase performance. A tuning box will only increase the amount of fuel that is added. However, because the tuning box is always fighting the ECM, the ECM will to some extent try to compensate for the increase in fuel that is caused by the tuning box. This is especially true of the latest Euro 4 and Euro 5 engines with very tight emission controls. The end result is often inconsistent performance as shown in the graph on the right, or sometimes no improvement in performance at all.
A RICA ECM upgrade on the other hand works in harmony with the engine and emissions control system. The RICA ECM upgrade is a carefully optimised rewrite of the software in the engine control computer. Unlike the tuning box which only alters the amount of fuel, the RICA ECM remap alters the turbo boost pressure, fuel injector duration, fuel timing, torque limiters and many other parameters, all of which can be optimised to give substantial increases in power and torque, smooth power delivery and consistent performance, with strict emissions compliance. Since no signals are intercepted, the ECM does not have to compensate for any abnormal readings and therefore the performance will be consistent. A RICA ECM remap is therefore by far the best way to improve performance because most modern ECMs are too sensitive for a tuning box to successfully alter the behaviour of the fuel system without the ECM compensating for it.
Another problem with tuning boxes is that they are likely to cause the ECM to log DTCs (fault codes) as the fuel pressure is not what the ECM is expecting. Even if you remove the tuning box, the DTCs may still be present. These DTCs are very confusing to any garage or workshop undertaking any service work or diagnostics and may result in unnecessary repair work being carried out. The RICA ECU upgrade does not affect any of the diagnostics systems and the ECM will only log a DTC if there is a genuine fault, therefore a RICA ECM upgrade is fully service and diagnostics compliant.
SUMMARY -
A tuning box may be cheaper, but it will never be as good as a fully optimised RICA ECM upgrade

| Save money and go green with RICA | |
| RICA is a brand new product specifically designed to reduce vehicle emissions and improve fuel economy by carefully optimizing the software in the engine management system. To put it simply, it’s an environmentally friendly ECU remap that is designed to save you money.
You may be thinking that this is nothing new! After all, many other companies develop performance ECU upgrades which also claim improved fuel economy as an added bonus. However, RICA Engineering have taken this concept to a new level and turned the art of chip tuning and remapping on its head. Traditionally, the focus of remapping (or chip tuning as it is often called) has always been about increasing performance, with possible fuel economy improvements as an added bonus. With the RICA upgrades, the focus is solely on reducing emissions and improving fuel economy rather than focusing on performance.
Independent testing by TNO has proved that RICA are able to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15% and improve fuel economy by up to 15%. These tests are the same tests that the manufacturers undertake in order to ensure their vehicles meet the latest European emissions legislation.
The RICA test data enables car owners and drivers to make a direct comparison between a standard car and a RICA optimised car in order to accurately calculate the potential fuel cost savings. The data is not simply an estimated figure applied to all models. Each specific model has been separately tested to provide fuel consumption data specific to each individual model.
With the rising cost of motoring, ever increasing congestion on the roads, and the pressure on everybody to reduce their carbon footprint, RICA believe that their upgrades are the way forward to cleaner and more efficient motoring whilst at the same time offering drivers significant savings in fuel costs. RICA have already invested significantly in this field and will continue to do develop the RICA range of upgrades to bring even more benefits to the consumer and for the environment well into the future.

| RICA meets Euro 4 Emissions Compliance and independently proves fuel economy gains! | |
| RICA Engineering are the first aftermarket tuning company in the world to achieve Euro 4 compliance for their performance diesel ECU upgrades! But what does this mean? How does it compare with TUV approval? And what are the results?
The results of the tests prove that for example a Volvo V70 D5 Euro 4 163 hp achieves the following improvements with the RICA Peformance ECU upgrade:
Urban emissions reduced by 15%
Average emissions reduced by 10%
Urban fuel economy improved by 15%
Average fuel economy improved by 10%
For any customer with a RICA Engineering diesel ECU upgrade, Euro 4 compliance means complete assurance of the quality of the performance software. It shows that RICA have had their performance ECU upgrades independently tested and verified by on officially recognised body to prove that the upgrade really does reduce emissions, and that fuel economy does indeed improve as claimed by RICA.
Many tuning companies claim TUV approval for their products, but TUV approval only shows that the product meets the minimum required safety standards for use. TUV approval does not prove reduced emissions or improved economy. TUV has nothing to do with emissions, performance or economy at all.
Euro 4 Emissions Compliance means that the actual real world performance of the engine, and specifically the emissions, comply with the latest European regulations to which all the vehicle manufacturers must also comply with. Euro 4 compliance is therefore a much higher level of quality assurance because it proves that the actual performance software is written to the same high standards as that of the manufacturers. Most importantly, it proves that your car meets the same strict European emissions requirements as it did when it left the factory.
The tests were carried out by the Dutch equivalent to MIRA. Full test data is available from RICA Engineering.
MOT Emissions
Tuning a car correctly means that the engine emissions must still comply with regulations. In the UK this is fairly straight forward because the only emissions test that the owner must comply with is the MOT once the car is older than 3 years. RICA ensure that all cars tuned in the UK will pass all the current MOT emissions tests, assuming of course that there is no other problem with the car which could cause an emissions failure such as a faulty catalytic converter.
